Over 170 Arrested in Attacks on KFC Outlets During Gaza War Protests

Nationwide Unrest Targets U.S. Fast-Food Chain

In recent weeks, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in violent protests targeting KFC outlets, driven by anti-U.S. sentiment and opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Major cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad have reported at least 11 incidents where protesters, armed with sticks, vandalized KFC establishments. Authorities have arrested over 170 individuals in connection with these attacks. In Lahore, a KFC employee was fatally shot by unknown assailants, prompting investigations into the motive behind the killing.

Mirpur Incident: A Flashpoint of Violence

In Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, a large group of pro-Palestinian protesters stormed a KFC outlet, accusing it of supporting Israeli forces. The demonstrators ransacked the premises before setting it ablaze, causing significant damage. Police arrested over 50 individuals involved in the attack. During the clashes, nine police officers sustained injuries from stones thrown by the protesters.

Sukkur and Islamabad: Escalation of Protests

In Sukkur, hundreds of anti-Israel protesters vandalized and set fire to a KFC outlet on Military Road. Videos circulating on social media show the mob smashing the restaurant’s windows and furniture before igniting the premises. Police intervened using tear gas and baton charges, arresting several individuals involved in the riots.

In Islamabad, an anti-Israel protest outside a McDonald’s outlet turned violent, resulting in injuries to police officers and the arrest of at least eight activists. The demonstration, organized by the Islami Jamiat Talba, escalated when protesters entered the restaurant premises, leading to confrontations with law enforcement.

Political and Religious Responses

The Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), known for promoting boycotts of Israeli-related products, has denied organizing the violent actions against KFC outlets. TLP spokesperson Rehan Mohsin Khan stated that any involvement by individuals claiming affiliation with TLP should be considered personal acts, not reflective of the party’s policy.

Religious leaders across Pakistan have called for peaceful protests and boycotts without resorting to violence or property damage. They emphasize the importance of expressing solidarity with Palestinians through non-violent means.

Impact on Western Brands and Market Dynamics

The unrest has significantly impacted Western brands operating in Pakistan. Consumer boycotts have led to a decline in market shares for U.S. beverage companies like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. In 2023, Coca-Cola’s market share in Pakistan’s consumer sector fell from 6.3% to 5.7%, while PepsiCo’s share decreased from 10.8% to 10.4%. Local brands are gaining traction as consumers increasingly avoid U.S. products in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Law Enforcement Measures and Ongoing Investigations

In response to the attacks, Pakistani police have increased security around KFC locations nationwide and are conducting thorough investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible. Authorities are utilizing CCTV footage and other evidence to track down individuals involved in the violent protests. Law enforcement agencies have emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order and preventing further incidents of this nature.
